Mutton Erachi

Mutton Erachi is a rich, flavourful Kerala-style mutton curry, cooked with a blend of spices, coconut, and tamarind for a tender, aromatic dish.

Ingredients :

1. Mutton (curry cut with bone) 250 grams
2. Onion 1 medium, finely chopped
3. Tomato 1 medium, chopped
4. Green chili 1-2, slit
5. Ginger-garlic paste 1 tsp
6. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
7. Red chili powder 1 tsp
8. Coriander powder 1 tsp
9. Fennel seeds 1/2 tsp
10. Cinnamon stick 1 small
11. Cloves 2 Nos
12. Cardamom 1 Nos
13. Tamarind paste 1 tsp
14. Coconut milk 1/4 cup
15. Curry leaves A few
16. Salt To taste
17. Oil 1 tbsp
18. Fresh coriander leaves For garnish

Procedure :

1. In a Casserole, heat oil. Add cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and fennel seeds. Sauté for a minute, then add chopped onions, green chili, and ginger-garlic paste. Cook until the onions turn golden brown.
2. Add the mutton pieces and sauté for 5-7 minutes until they are seared and browned. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Stir well to coat the mutton with the spices.
3. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften. Stir in tamarind paste and a little water (about 1/2 cup), and let it simmer for 10 minutes to blend the flavours.
4. Add enough water (about 1 1/2 cups) to cook the mutton. Cook for 35-40 minutes until the mutton is tender.
5. Once the mutton is cooked and tender, add coconut milk and simmer for another 5 minutes. Adjust salt to taste and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
