Toor Dal Tadka

A simple, hearty dal tempered with spices — a comfort food classic in every Indian home. Perfect with rice, roti, or just a drizzle of ghee on top.

INGREDIENTS

For Dal:

  1. ½ cup toor dal (washed and soaked for 20 mins)
  2. 1 small tomato (chopped)
  3. ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  4. 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  5. 2½ cups water

For Tempering:

  1. 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  2. ½ tsp cumin seeds
  3. 1–2 dried red chillies
  4. 1 pinch hing (asafoetida)
  5. 1 green chilli (slit)
  6. 1 tsp ginger (grated or finely chopped)
  7. 1 small onion (finely chopped, optional)
  8. ½ tsp red chilli powder
  9. Fresh coriander for garnish

PROCEDURE

  • Add soaked toor dal, chopped tomato, turmeric powder, salt, and water into the MultiCook.
  • Close the lid and select the 'Dal' preset.
  • Let the MultiCook complete cooking and allow the pressure to release naturally.
  • Open the lid and lightly mash the dal for a smooth consistency. Keep it on Keep Warm mode.
  • In a small pan, heat ghee or oil for tempering.
  • Add cumin seeds, hing, and dried red chillies. Let them splutter.
  • Add green chilli, ginger, and onion. Sauté until golden brown.
  • Add red chilli powder and quickly stir (do not burn).
  • Pour the prepared tadka into the dal in the MultiCook and mix well.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot.
